The incoming freshman class at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) this year saw a significant decrease in the percentage of Black, Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander students, dropping from 31% to 16%. This decline was attributed to the U.S. Supreme Court’s banning of colleges from using race as a factor in admissions in 2023. In contrast, the proportion of Asian American students in the class increased from 41% to 47%, while white students remained at a similar level.
MIT administrators expressed disappointment in the lack of racial and ethnic diversity in the incoming class, a result of the Supreme Court decision on affirmative action. The court ruled that race-conscious admissions practices violated the promise of equal protection under the law. Despite efforts to promote diversity and offer educational opportunities broadly, the ruling had a significant impact on the composition of the incoming class.
Moving forward, MIT plans to enhance its recruitment and admissions strategies, as well as promote its generous financial aid programs, to attract a more diverse student body. The school also aims to invest in expanding access to science and math education for young students across the country to address enrollment gaps. Despite the challenges posed by the Supreme Court ruling, MIT remains committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive campus environment.
