Correction Dept. announces decision to cease housing inmates at minimum security prison in Bridgewater

The Massachusetts Department of Correction has announced plans to close the Old Colony Correctional Center minimum-security men’s facility in Bridgewater in an effort to enhance operational efficiency and save money. The closure, which will save the state roughly $2.6 million in necessary repairs, comes as part of a broader effort to assess facility needs and be fiscally responsible. The decision to close the facility, which currently operates at 44% capacity with 70 inmates, follows the closure of the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Concord. All 70 inmates at the Old Colony Correctional Center will be relocated to other minimum-security locations by Oct. 31, while the facility’s 26 staff members will be reassigned to the Medium Security Facility on the same campus. This consolidation of resources is intended to improve operations, uphold the DOC’s rehabilitative mission, and deliver effective services while managing taxpayer resources responsibly. The closure of the 40-year-old facility is part of the department’s commitment to deepening investments in programming and services while making necessary budget cuts.
