National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan announced a visit to China to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi in an effort to improve ties between the US and China. Despite the tense relations between the two countries, Sullivan’s visit marks the first by a US national security adviser since 2016. This trip does not indicate a softening of President Biden’s approach to China, with the US committing to managing the competitive relationship responsibly.
US-China relations have been strained in recent years due to disagreements over economic ambitions and incidents like the US downing of a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon. Recent conversations between US and Chinese leaders have focused on becoming partners rather than rivals, while still acknowledging unresolved issues.
During the visit, Sullivan is expected to discuss concerns about China’s support for Russia amid tensions in Ukraine, as well as issues related to North Korea and the Middle East. The visit comes ahead of the US general election in November, with Vice President Kamala Harris expected to continue dialogue with China while maintaining pressure. In contrast, Republican candidate Donald Trump has pledged a tougher stance on China.
Sullivan’s visit highlights ongoing efforts to manage US-China relations in a context of competition and tensions, with both countries seeking to address their differences while maintaining diplomatic engagement.
