Red Sox bring back Joely Rodriguez for series against Diamondbacks

The Boston Red Sox made some roster moves ahead of their game against the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend. The team recalled left-handed pitcher Joely Rodriguez from Triple-A Worcester Red Sox and sent Greg Weissert down to the minors. In addition, James Paxton was placed on the 60-day injured list, bringing an end to his season due to a calf strain.

Rodriguez will provide some left-handed pitching depth to the Red Sox bullpen, joining Brennan Bernardino as the only other lefty on the active roster. The 32-year-old Rodriguez had a stint with the Red Sox earlier in the season but was designated for assignment in April. He has since impressed in Worcester, posting a 1.88 ERA in 13 relief appearances.

Boston’s need for another lefty pitcher was highlighted by the injury of Cam Booser, who is on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation. With Rodriguez stepping in, the Red Sox hope to solidify their bullpen as they push for a playoff spot this season. Manager Alex Cora expressed confidence in Rodriguez’s abilities and believes he can make a significant contribution to the team.

The move signals the Red Sox’s commitment to shoring up their pitching staff as they enter a crucial phase of the season. With Rodriguez now in the mix, the team hopes to maintain their strong performance and secure a postseason berth after missing out in 2020.
