Left-handed starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery revealed that he would have considered playing for the Boston Red Sox if they had made an offer to him during the past offseason. Despite being favored to sign with the Red Sox, Montgomery ended up agreeing to terms with the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 26, two days before the start of the 2024 MLB season.
Montgomery blamed his former agent, Scott Boras, for “butchering” his offseason and failing to secure a deal with Boston in a timely manner. After firing Boras and hiring new agents, Montgomery expressed his disappointment in not receiving an offer from the Red Sox, despite being linked to the team throughout the offseason.
The 31-year-old pitcher expressed his interest in playing for Boston, mentioning that he and his wife enjoyed their time in the area. However, Montgomery never received a contract offer from the Red Sox and ultimately signed a one-year, $25 million deal with the Diamondbacks.
Since joining the Diamondbacks, Montgomery has struggled with a 6.44 ERA and 1.67 WHIP in 19 starts over 95 innings. Manager Torey Lovullo announced that Montgomery will be moved to the bullpen due to his struggles on the mound.
Despite the disappointing turn of events in his free agency and subsequent struggles with the Diamondbacks, Montgomery remains open to the possibility of playing in Boston in the future. This revelation has left many wondering what could have been for the Red Sox if they had made an offer to the left-handed pitcher.
