U.S. Army Private Travis King will plead guilty to five charges, including desertion, while taking responsibility for his conduct. Last year, he ran into North Korea and was taken into custody, leading to charges of desertion, assault against fellow soldiers, and solicitation of child pornography. After his release from North Korean custody, negotiations led to his retrieval by the Swedish government and handoff to the U.S. ambassador in China. King will plead guilty to five offenses, including desertion and assault, while the remaining charges will be withdrawn and dismissed by the Army. He joined the Army in January 2021 and was detained in South Korea over assault allegations before fleeing to North Korea. The guilty plea and sentencing hearing will take place on September 20 at Fort Bliss in Texas.
