Massachusetts State Police is in the midst of investigating the behavior of lead detective Trooper Michael Proctor following his removal from the Karen Read murder case. Proctor was transferred from the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office and is currently on paid leave pending a duty status hearing.
The trial against Read, charged with the murder of her boyfriend John O’Keefe, ended in a mistrial, with Proctor’s testimony drawing intense criticism for unprofessional and disparaging comments made about Read during the investigation. Proctor’s questionable connections with witnesses and inappropriate texts also came to light, casting doubt on the integrity of the case.
Interim Col. Jack Mawn condemned Proctor’s actions, stating that misconduct would not be tolerated in the Massachusetts State Police. Legal analysts believe Proctor’s behavior may have severely damaged the government’s case against Read.
Security expert Todd McGhee highlighted that if Proctor is placed on the Brady List, his credibility as a witness in future trials may be compromised. Governor Maura Healey supported Proctor’s removal pending the investigation, emphasizing the need for due process.
The ongoing scandal surrounding Proctor adds to a list of controversies that have eroded public trust in the Massachusetts State Police. Efforts are being made to regain public confidence, but challenges persist in the wake of repeated scandals. The State Police Association of Massachusetts expressed disapproval of Proctor’s language and behavior, emphasizing the need for accountability within the force.
Proctor and his wife declined to comment when approached by reporters, while his lawyer has not responded for comment. The outcome of the internal affairs investigation and Proctor’s future with the Massachusetts State Police remain uncertain.
