Along with her partner and toddler, she now resides at the Wembley stadium homeless shelter. After being moved multiple times, Majavava and her family find themselves in poor living conditions at the Wembley shelter. The shelter, originally intended to be temporary, lacks maintenance and security, leaving residents feeling abandoned. Meanwhile, the Usindiso building, once a shelter for abused women and children, now stands as a hollow shell, a reminder of the tragic events that took place there.
The government and city officials have been held responsible for neglecting these buildings, with calls for accountability and improved housing solutions. Advocacy groups like the Inner City Federation are demanding better living conditions and alternative accommodations for those affected. The inquiry into the Usindiso fire has recommended compensation, psychosocial support, and accountability for those responsible, but these measures have yet to be implemented.
Majavava’s struggle to obtain identification and access basic services highlights the ongoing challenges faced by survivors of the fire. With no income, unsafe living conditions, and bureaucratic hurdles to overcome, her hopes for a better future remain uncertain. As the city grapples with the consequences of neglected buildings and evictions, the need for sustainable housing solutions and support for vulnerable residents becomes increasingly urgent.
