Governor Maura Healey is taking action to tackle high energy bills that are burdening residents of Massachusetts. She plans to introduce legislation called the “energy affordability and independence” bill, along with an “energy affordability agenda,” aimed at reducing costs for families and businesses. Healey highlighted the need to bring down expenses, promote clean energy generation, and protect against future price spikes during a speech to 700 business leaders at a chamber of commerce forum.
While the Department of Public Utilities recently ordered utility companies to cut energy bills by 5% for March and April, Healey criticized the measure as insufficient. The governor emphasized the importance of reducing reliance on costly and volatile fuels, which lead to annual spikes in energy costs and send money out of state. He expressed a commitment to seeking input and support from the community in implementing these changes in the near future.
The proposed legislation comes in response to concerns from residents about the financial strain of high energy bills, particularly during the winter months. By taking steps to increase energy affordability and promote self-reliance in energy generation, Healey aims to create a more sustainable and cost-effective energy system for the state of Massachusetts.
