Dozens of potential jurors gathered at a Dedham courthouse for the start of jury selection in the Karen Read case, where she is accused of backing her SUV into her then-boyfriend, a Boston Police officer. With intense publicity and public participation, selecting a jury is anticipated to be a challenge. Retired Superior Court judge Jack Lu explained that understanding the jury instructions and following them is crucial, rather than just knowing about the case.
More than 130 potential jurors showed up, with many indicating they had heard about the case and formed an opinion. Despite this, only those who can follow instructions will be selected. Read, accompanied by her five lawyers, wore a gray plaid suit and sat through the proceedings as jurors filled out questionnaires behind her. The unique nature of the case, which has sparked intense interest, has added to the challenge of selecting an impartial jury.
