Press Release: Dorchester Hosts 29th Annual Mother’s Day Walk for Peace
Dorchester Town Field Park became a gathering place for hundreds of families and community members this Mother’s Day as they participated in the 29th annual Walk for Peace, honoring those affected by homicide and trauma. The event was initiated in 1996 by Clementina Chery, whose son was murdered two years prior. “How does a mother celebrate Mother’s Day after such a loss?” she pondered, leading her to organize walks around Dorchester as a way to break the silence.
The Walk for Peace serves as the flagship fundraiser for the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute, aiming to raise $600,000 for critical services and advocacy for survivors of violent crime. As of Sunday, over $500,000 had been raised, with donations continuing until Father’s Day in June. Notable programs include Survivors Outreach Services and Generation Peace, focused on helping families and engaging youth.
The 2023 theme, "Cultivating Cycles of Peace," fueled a "celebratory" atmosphere despite the weight of loss felt by many participants. “It’s about celebrating lives and embracing hope,” said senior producer Luis Antonio Thompson. The morning rally showcased a united community, fostering a spirit of love and resilience.
