Ted Danson Shares Thoughts on the Passing of ‘Cheers’ Co-Star George Wendt

Ted Danson Pays Tribute to George Wendt Following His Death at 76

In a heartfelt tribute, Ted Danson mourned the loss of his beloved "Cheers" co-star, George Wendt, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday at the age of 76. Danson, 77, expressed his grief through a representative, stating, "I am devastated to hear that Georgie is no longer with us. I am sending all my love to Bernadette and the children. It is going to take me a long time to get used to this. I love you, Georgie."

Rhea Perlman, who portrayed Carla Tortelli alongside Wendt’s iconic character, Norm Peterson, shared her own sentiments, remarking, "George Wendt was the sweetest, kindest man I ever met. It was impossible not to like him. I’ll miss him more than words can say." Their playful dynamic on "Cheers" provided many memorable moments, illustrating their strong bond both on and off the screen.

Wendt’s family confirmed his passing and requested privacy during this time of mourning. They described him as a "doting family man" and a cherished friend to all who knew him. Wendt gained critical acclaim for his role on "Cheers," earning six consecutive Emmy nominations from 1982 to 1993, while Danson received 11 nominations and two wins.

The nostalgia for "Cheers" heightened recently, as cast members, including Danson, Perlman, Kelsey Grammer, and John Ratzenberger, reunited at the Emmys in January 2024, celebrating the show’s legacy. Danson acknowledged the joy of coming together, while Grammer reflected on the warm memories shared from their time on the series.

Wendt is survived by his wife Bernadette Birkett, three children, two stepchildren, and his nephew, actor Jason Sudeikis. Details surrounding the cause of his death remain undisclosed.
