Springfield City Council Prolongs Pawn Brokers Regulation
SPRINGFIELD – In a decisive move to enhance public safety, the Springfield City Council has voted to maintain current regulations for pawn brokers. Pawn brokers will continue to document the details of individuals selling items and are required to retain these items for a minimum of 30 days, enabling law enforcement to track potentially stolen goods.
The council also approved an increase in the annual renewal fee for a pawn broker’s license, raising it from $100 to $200. This fee adjustment formalizes a price that has been in practice for several years.
Detective Chad Joseph of the property crimes division emphasized the importance of renewing the pawn brokers ordinance, highlighting how it assists victims of theft and robbery in recovering their belongings. The continued oversight aims to bolster community safety and deter criminal activity associated with stolen property.
The council’s actions reflect a commitment to safeguarding the interests of Springfield residents, reinforcing regulations that support both law enforcement and victim support efforts. The updated fees and sustained requirements underscore the city’s proactive approach in addressing property crime.
