Pope Leo Proclaims Rhode Island Infant’s Recovery as the First Miracle of His Papacy

Pope Leo XIV Declares First Miracle of His Papacy in Rhode Island

In a momentous announcement, Pope Leo XIV declared his first miracle following the miraculous recovery of a newborn boy in Rhode Island, a case hailed by church officials as a testament to faith and divine intervention. The infant, Tyquan Hall, was born in January 2007 at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket with critically low vital signs and was not breathing for over an hour. Attending physician Juan Sanchez-Esteban, who is from Almería, Spain, turned to prayer invoking Venerable Priest Salvador Valera Parra, a 19th-century Spanish cleric recognized by Pope Francis in 2021.

As the physician prepared to relay the grim news to Tyquan’s parents, the baby began to show signs of recovery, astonishing medical staff who had anticipated a tragic outcome. Remarkably, despite the initial dire conditions, Tyquan has developed normally without any complications.

The Diocese of Providence initiated an investigation into the incident in 2014 in collaboration with the Spanish diocese. Father Timothy Reilly, diocese chancellor, expressed jubilation over the recognition, emphasizing the power of prayer and the intercession of holy figures. This declaration moves forward the process for beatification of Salvador Valera Parra, further intertwining faith and healing in miraculous narratives.
