Ryan Borgwardt, a missing kayaker from Wisconsin, has been found alive after staging his death. Authorities have been in contact with him since Nov. 11, but his exact whereabouts are still unknown. Borgwardt sent a video confirming he is alive and has no plans of returning home. He faked his death by staging a kayaking accident, abandoning his phone in the lake, and fleeing to Canada. He took out a life insurance policy worth $375,000 before disappearing. Authorities are pulling on his heartstrings to get him to return, but he has concerns about how he will be received. Borgwardt’s laptop revealed communication with a woman from Uzbekistan, inquiries about moving funds to foreign banks, and the purchase of a life insurance policy. He is married with three children and was reported missing on August 12 when he failed to return from kayaking. An extensive search involving drones, sonar, and cadaver dogs did not locate him. A digital forensic analysis of his laptop revealed suspicious activities, prompting authorities to investigate further. Authorities are considering legal action against Borgwardt for obstruction and seeking restitution for the search efforts. Borgwardt may face charges and may be avoiding extradition due to the lack of an agreement between the U.S. and Uzbekistan.
