Massachusetts State Representative Christopher Flanagan, D-1st Barnstable, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of wire fraud and falsification of records. Flanagan, 37, of Dennis, is accused of pocketing tens of thousands of dollars from the Home Builders Association in Cape Cod (HBA) for his personal and political spending.
Flanagan, who served as the executive officer of HBA from 2019 to 2024, allegedly stole a total of $36,000 from the association’s bank account through wire transfers. He used the stolen funds for various purchases, including mortgage and credit card bills, campaign expenses, personal psychic services, electronic devices, and clothing. Flanagan also attempted to obstruct an investigation into a campaign mailer by attributing it to a fake person named “Jeanne Louise.”
The charges against Flanagan have raised concerns among state officials, with U.S. Attorney Leah B. Foley calling it an “appalling breach of public trust.” State House Speaker Ronald Mariano stated that the charges undermine public trust in the Legislature and pledged to ensure accountability.
Flanagan is scheduled to appear in federal court in Boston to face the charges. If convicted, he could face significant penalties. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dustin Chao and Lauren Maynard.
Flanagan, who represents the towns of Dennis, Yarmouth, and Brewster, has been urged to resign by Governor Healey. The accusations against him highlight the importance of transparency and ethical conduct in public office.
